We have
made many beautiful coronets for members of the Society for Creative Anachronisim and for renaissance
players. At left is the crown Mr. Edward Wenzer and I made as a gift for the SCA Laurel King of Arms (clicking the image will bring up a larger image). The design is based on the crowns of the English Garter King of Arms and of the Scottish Lyon King of Arms.
The Laurel King of Arms Crown is gilded sterling silver (about 2 1/2 Lbs.) with cast and applied decorations. The text around the band of the coronet reads in Greek "metron ariston" and in Latin "non
scripta non est".
This coronet and the coronets that follow are "hollow-ware". The outside sheet of metal is shaped and decorated by
repoussé and chasing. Cast decorations are then applied and the edges of the outside piece of metal are then folded in
and a second sheet of metal is soldered inside producing a coronet that is hollow. This design makes for a lighter but
very strong coronet. Note that these are still heavy coronets compared to the flat strips of metal many in the SCA wear.
